In the 1730s and 1740s, Vauxhall was the fashionable place to be for socialites and aristocrats. They would come to listen to classical music by George Frideric Handel. The name began here as it was known as London’s pleasure gardens for the affluent, the aristocrats as well as the wealthy sons of merchants. In the 18th century, the gardens were amongst London’s leading venues for public entertainment. The park had closed then reopened in 1976 and is now named Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens.
